One of the best places to track down international internships is the Verge Online Search Tool (vergemagazine.org/search), which includes a Work/Intern category. University career sites can also be helpful, such as yorku.ca/fes/careers/Internationa- linternships.htm. Most agencies will require you to pay a placement fee. Be sure to ask!


Placement Agencies in Canada


Globetrotters Education Consulting Inc: globetrotterseducation.ca. Intern placements lasting from six weeks to more than three months. Mainly in New Zealand, but also Australia and occasionally Chile, France and Germany.


Horizon Cosmopolite, horizoncosmopolite.com. Tries to match clients with suitable internships (among many other placements) main- ly in developing countries.


SWAP Canada: swap.ca/out_eng/destinations/usa_internship.aspx. Internships and professional training programmes in the United States for students and non-students, lasting from one to 18 months.


IAESTE Canada: queensu.ca/iaeste. The International Association for the Exchange of Students for Technical Experience provides international, course-related vacation training for thousands of university- level students in 80 member countries. Placements are available for students of engin- eering, technical science or technology.


AIESEC: aiesec.ca Runs a global internship programme in management, information technology and development.


U.S. Work Experience Companies/Organizations


Adelante: adelanteabroad.com Places interns in Barcelona, Madrid, Marbella, Seville and Jerez de la Frontera in Spain. Interships are also available in Chile, Uruguay and Costa Rica.


Amerispan: amerispan.com Language training organization that arranges internships and volunteer placements lasting two weeks to six months in Spanish-speaking countries and beyond.


CDS International Inc: cdsintl.org Practical training internships for students or recent graduates. Mainly in Germany, but also in Spain, Argentina and Russia.


Interexchange: workingabroad.org Internships in Argentina, Chile and New Zealand, among other opportunities world- wide.

Specific Countries Finland: Finnish-Canadian Trainee Exchanges Program: Administered by the Associa-


tion of Universities and Colleges of Canada (aucc.ca).


Italy: Spannocchia Foundation: spannocchia.org/internships Offers the Farm Internship Program that gives mainly young Americans the opportun- ity to spend time on an agriturismo farm in Tuscany while studying Italian.


Spain: Instituto Hemingway de Español: institutohemingway.com/practica.htm Places interns of most nationalities with local companies in northern Spain.


Switzerland: Canada-Switzerland Youth Mobility Program: Overseen by International Youth Experience experience.ca Young workers and students can gain professional expertise in Switzerland for up to 12 months.


UK: Mountbatten Institute: mountbatten.org Reciprocal programme places young American professionals in London. They acquire practical training in business for 12 months, while studying for the Certificate in Inter- national Business Practice or the first part of an MBA in International Business Practice.


Australia: Australian Internships: internships.com.au Tries to secure professional internship placement for applicants.


China: IES Global: iesglobal.com Offers practical work opportunities in China for overseas students and graduates through the China Internship Program.


China & Hong Kong: Next Step Connections Ltd: nextstepconnections.com Professional internship programme in Shanghai (Jan to Dec) and Hong Kong (summer) in many fields, including architecture, art and design, finance, IT, engineering, journal- ism, law, medicine and advertising.


Hong Kong & Indonesia: JuniorExpat: juniorexpat.com iExperience programme in Indonesia and Hong Kong in marketing, logistics, law, hos- pitality, finance, information technology, etc. Internships last three to six months.


Chile: Chile Inside: chileinside.cl Professional internships and working holiday programmes, mainly in the tourism sec- tor, throughout Chile.


Ecuador: ELEP (Experiential Learning Ecuadorian Programs: elep.org Customized internships throughout Ecuador in many fields: audit/finance, accounting, human resources, foreign trade, marketing/PR, IT, graphic design, engineering, archi- tecture, medicine, environment, journalism, law and social work. A good knowledge of Spanish is required.


Specific career internships


Multinational companies and international organizations may offer work experience positions to undergraduates and recent graduates. For example, students over 20 with a background in public health can apply to join the World Health Organization in Geneva as an intern for six to 12 weeks (who.int/employment/internship/en). Other internships are available in scores of specialist fields, for example, for young agricultur- alists through Agriventure Canada in Calgary (agriventure.info) and for trainee diving instructors with Subway Watersports in Honduras (subwaywatersports.com/Courses/ internship.htm).
