Ann McDermott ’81 ESTHER BRESLOW PROFESSOR OF BIOLOGICAL CHEMISTRY, COLUMBIA UNIVERSITY A R
Ann McDermott is the associate vice president for academic planning and sciences initiatives and the Esther Breslow Professor of Biological Chemistry at Columbia University. Using new nuclear magnetic resonance methods, McDermott studies the struc- ture, function and flexibility of proteins in native-like environments, such as native lipid bilayers, prion plaques or whole virus particles. She was named a DuPont Young Investigator in 1992, a Cottrell Scholar in 1994, and an Alfred P. Sloan Research Fellow in 1995. She received the American Chemi- cal Society’s Pure Award in Chemistry in 1996 and has been a member of the American Academy of Arts and Sciences since 2000. She has also played a lead role in the planning of Columbia’s new sci- ence building. McDermott earned a B.S. in chem- istry and received her Ph.D. in chemistry from the University of California, Berkeley and was a post- doc at MIT. McDermott is a member of the HMC Board of Trustees.
