A year of changes W
David Ridsdale Editor-in-Chief
hile 2011 had been tipped as a year of change for the photovoltaic industry with expected changes in market and manufacturing leadership pending but no-one could have imagined how pivitol 2011 is likely to become to the long term future of the global photovoltaic and solar
industry. While some changes were expected to national subsidies in some areas the changing attitudes to the scope of subsidies and subsequent revision of support have caught many companies unaware.
As well as the internal confusions, activities on a much broader stage are set to have as much, or more impact on the future direction of the industry around the world. Civil unrest in the oil rich Arab region has created consternation and price fluctuations to current and future oil supplies. The terrible events in Japan has led to a deteriorating nuclear situation that, regardless of the outcome, will impact energy plans and discussions around the globe for some time to come. Despite the terrible nature of these events attention will turn to sustainable and safer forms of energy production. The first step is to ensure the affected areas get back on their feet and this is another area that renewable energies can, and do assist as energy is of key concern whether the loss is due to natural disaster or civil unrest, and microgenerated mobile energy sources are a key tool in ensuring rebuilding can occur. It was so positive to see the number of companies in the industry offer their services and support to these regions.
The other key factor for the global industry is the impending changes to Feed in Tariffs around the world. The debate will continue as to the long term impact and only time will be the true judge but already Germany has shown that revising the subsidies does not lead to the collapse of an industry that has had the time to build its infrastructure. Other countries are not being clear enough in their plans to encourage strong investment. The real change required is for the industry itself to take repsonsibility to educate potential customers on the reasons they should be asking their governments to support the solar revolution.
