Ronald McDonald House Student-Athlete of the Week


Junior goaltender Mollie Mackler was named Ronald Mc- Donald House Charities Duke Student-Athlete of the Week after recording a career-high 20 saves, including 15 in the first half, in the third-ranked Blue Devils 12-10 defeat to second-ranked Northwestern on Saturday afternoon from Lakeside Field in Evanston, Ill. Mackler has made 100 saves on the season for the 9-2 Blue Devils, boasting a .492 save percentage.


N.C., for a showdown with the third-ranked North Carolina women’s tennis team on Wednesday, April 6 at 3 p.m., at the Cone-Kenfield Tennis Center. The Blue Devils and the Tar Heels will meet for the 73rd time with Duke holding a 39-33 advantage in the all-time series. The last time the two schools met was on May 22, 2010, in the NCAA Tournament quarterfinals. North Carolina downed Duke 4-3, after the Blue Devils jumped out to a 2-1 lead. Before the quarterfinal meeting, the Tar Heels snapped the Blue Devils 29-match home win streak in the regular season as North Carolina downed Duke 4-3 on April 7, 2010. This year’s series will count as one point toward the “Battle of the Blues” competi- tion, sponsored by Continental Tire, which North Carolina currently leads 10-8. Duke (17-2, 6-0 ACC) enters the competition having won its last nine matches, in-


cluding four against nationally-ranked opponents. The Blue Devils have won eight out of the last nine doubles point during that span, and have posted a 46-9 singles record. Elizabeth Plotkin leads all Blue Devils with an 18-1 record in dual matches this season, and is a perfect 6-0 against conference opponents. Freshman Rachel Kahan is second on the team in dual match wins with an unblemished record at 17-0.


Duke Set to Host Track & Field Invitational This weekend, Duke will host the annual Duke Invitational. The meet brings over 50 schools and


dozens of top post collegiate athletes to compete in the two day event. Two of the top competitions to look out for over the weekend will be the women’s 800-meter and the men’s 5,000m. Saturday afternoon will see the women’s 800m. Up for the Blue Devils will be NCAA runner-up in the


mile, Kate Van Buskirk. Van Buskirk, who also holds the collegiate record in the 1,000m, will be running her first race since the NCAA Indoor Championships in early March. Her top competition will be Laura Januszewski. The North Dakota State University graduate finished seventh at the 2010 USATF Champi- onships. Currently running for Brooks, she holds a personal best of 2:01.19. Friday evening, in the men’s 5,000m, senior Josh Lund, who holds the indoor school records in both the 3,000 and 5,000m, will run against the NCAA indoor champion Leonard Korir of Iona. Other performances to look out for will be the men’s and women’s throwers, who are coming off fan- tastic finishes at the Auburn Tiger Track Classic. Amy Matulewicz, Shannon Sullivan, Andrea Hopkins, Mike Schallmo and Michael Barbas will kick the weekend off for the Blue Devils with the women throwing javelin and men in the shot Friday at noon.
