Health and Wellness Glossary 2011
Personal fi tness trainer: A certifi ed fi tness pro- fessional who designs fi tness programs for indi- viduals desiring one-on-one training. The goal is to provide optimal fi tness results in the privacy of one’s home or at another location, such as a club or offi ce.
Pilates: A structured system of small isolated movements that demands powerful focus on feel- ing every nuance of muscle action while working out on fl oor mats or machines. Emphasizes devel- opment of the torso’s abdominal power center, or core. More gentle than conventional exercises, Pi- lates, like yoga, yields long, lean, fl exible muscles whose gracefully balanced movements readily translate into everyday activities like walking, sit- ting and bending. Can help in overcoming injuries.
Prolotherapy: A rejuvenating therapy that uses in- jections of natural substances to stimulate collagen growth, in order to strengthen weak or damaged joints, tendons, ligaments or muscles. Often used as a natural alternative to drugs and/or surgery to treat pain syndromes, including degenerative ar- thritis, lower back, neck and joint pain, carpal tun- nel syndrome, migraine headaches, and torn liga- ments and cartilage.
Qigong and Tai chi: Qigong and Tai chi combine movement, meditation and breath regulation to enhance the fl ow of vital energy (qi or chi, pro- nounced “chee”) in the body , improve circulation and enhance immune function. Qigong traces its roots to traditional Chinese medicine. Tai chi was originally a self-defense martial art descended from qigong and employed to promote inner peace and calm.
Real Time EEG Neurofeedback: Involves direct training of brain function. Using computer pro- cessing to capture electrical activity in the brain, an individual can reward the brain with positive feedback, changing its activity to desired, more ap- propriate patterns. Gradually, the brain learns and remembers how to exhibit only the good patterns.
Regression therapies: Operate on the assumption that many physical, mental and emotional prob- lems are extensions of unresolved problems from the past, such as childhood traumas. The practitio- ner uses hypnosis, or other altered states of con- sciousness, and relaxation techniques to access the source of “unfi nished business,” and helps clients to analyze, integrate and release past traumas that are interfering with their current lives.
Nanette Savage Certified Advanced Rolfer™ I
mproved energy, range of motion, balance, coordination, and strength is what Nanette Savage has dedicated her life and practice to over the past 20 years. Once an athlete in Martial Arts, she learned first-hand about Rolfing and the method’s unique capability to improve the body’s physical abilities. After experiencing a tremendous improvement in her own athletic perfor- mance, Nanette decided to attend the Rolf Institute of Structural Integration in Boulder Colorado, graduating in 1992. She expanded her knowledge and skills by also becoming a Licensed Massage Therapist and has continued her studies in Rolfing. Her extensive knowledge and dedication to this practice has earned her the highest level of accreditation, professionally distinguished as a Certified Advanced Rolfer™. As Nanette states, “The purpose of Rolfing is to help recipients achieve greater balance and mobility by creating a more lifted and symmetrical body alignment.” Rolfing is a method used to reorganize the whole body. Realigning the head, shoulders, thorax, pelvis, and legs into correct vertical arrangement allows more efficient use of the muscles with less expended energy. As she explains, “Rolfing is an original and scientifically validated system of hands-on manipulation of the body’s connective tissue or fascia. By lengthening and freeing the fascia, the muscles and bones are able to take their appropriate place in gravity once again.” Nanette's goal is to move each and every body towards optimal symmetry and balance, which is called for so clearly by the architecture of the body.

Refl exology: A natural healing art based upon the principle that there are refl exes in the feet and hands that correspond to every part of the body. Correctly stimulating and applying pressure to the feet or hands increases circulation and promotes specifi cally designated bodily and muscular func- tions.
Reiki: Means “universal life-force energy.” A method of activating and balancing the life-force (qi or chi, pronounced “chee”). Practitioners use light hand placements to channel healing energies to organs and glands or to align the body’s chakras (energy centers). Various techniques can ease emo- tional and mental distress, heal chronic and acute physical problems and achieve spiritual focus and clarity. Reiki can be a valuable addition to the work of chiropractors, massage therapists, nurses and others for whom the use of touch is essential and appropriate.
