OLYMPIC ACHIEVEMENTS

Showcasing the UK’s world-class credentials in green technology is the London 2012 Olympic Park in Stratford, a former industrial site, one of the largest urban development projects in Europe. By the time the Park is fi nished, 1.4m tonnes of contaminated soil will be cleaned, enough to fi ll the Yankee Stadium in New York twice over. Innovative decontamination techniques mean that 97 per cent of materials found on the Park are being reused or recycled. Moreover, the Park’s state-of-the art Energy Centre includes a Combined Cooling Heat and Power plant which will capture the heat generated by electricity production and lead to carbon reductions of more than 1,000 tonnes per year.

REHASHED ASHES RockTron, a UK leader in innovative recycling technology, secured a major contract in Malaysia. The deal, to recycle fresh and stockpiled coal-fi red power station waste (or fl y ash) for Malaysia’s main energy provider TNB, came after the company received support from UK Trade & Investment. Head of marketing Peter Crofts says: “Thanks to our agreement with TNB, we can start to reclaim, recycle and re-use the valuable minerals contained in Asia’s stockpiled fl y ash. A personal energy monitor produced by London-based fi rm DIY Kyoto has proved a major success across the globe. ‘wattson’ tells you how much electricity you are using and generating in your home or offi ce, helping you to protect the environment as well as save on energy bills. To date, it has been exported across much of Europe, Asia, South America and Australia.
