panorama

Perspective: Canada

THE BIG COUNTRY Canada is a young country, with a population of around half of the UK but a land mass second only to Russia. It is blessed with some of the world’s largest deposits of precious resources.

OIL KINGS ALBERTA is the energy capital of Canada, with oil and gas driving nearly half of the province’s economy. Calgary is home to every major oil and gas operator in the country, including BP, Royal Dutch Shell, Total and Statoil, along with major trade associations and associated industries. Many SMEs also do good business either direct or through partnerships, and indicators predict major potential for UK plc. The Oil Sands Developers Group alone has listed more than 100 new projects in various stages of development. In addition to the oil and gas industries, new opportunities also exist for UK fi rms in clean or green technologies. Water treatment, tailings reduction/separation, GHG emission technologies and land reclamation products and services will continue to grow in importance.
