On the up
There is no doubt the UK economy is in a state of flux. Interest rates on the floor, inflation rising and growth figures yo-yoing. What businesses need to build their confidence is stability, regardless of where they can find it. Having previewed several exhibitions per year for the last 25-years the one thing I have learned is that exhibition organisers offer stability. Often working on a 12-month cycle, organisers are forced to look at the bigger, long-term picture which is often much less frightening than looking at tomorrow’s order book alone. Likewise, something else I have learned over the years is that during a downturn most suppliers continue to invest in product development: another illustration of stability.
Thus, it is hardly surprising that I took real pleasure editing the Sign and Digital 2011 preview in this issue. Many of the suppliers have timed their product launches to coincide with the event and the organisers themselves are using 2011 to introduce a new Awards scheme.
Innovation abounds in all areas of the industry from print platforms and ink technology to substrates and software. Whether you are planning to attend the event or not, turn to page 12 for a 13-page preview of the exhibitor highlights. Each page is packed with reasons to attend and I hope to see you there. Elsewhere in this issue our specialist technical contributors offer updates on product decoration and super wide printer technology which we hope will inspire new ways to win new business.
