DIGITAL: SUPER-WIDE FORMAT PRINTERS
Bigger is better
It's not always true that bigger is better when it comes to digital printing, but there are some fantastic results out there in the super-wide format market. Here are some of the machines and applications on offer By Tracey Rushton-Thorpe
A
s the pioneer of super-wide format digital printers when solvent-based machines were prevalent, EFI continues its five metre product line with the Vutek GS5000r a UV-cure system designed to combine versatility and high throughput. The roll-to-roll capabilities of the Vutek GS5000r enable display producers to benefit from outputting super-wide format jobs up to the full 5m width, with the additional ability to produce multiple jobs simultaneously. For example, three applications of 1.62 m can be printed at the same time from independent print queues, which increases machine flexibility. Looking at quality, EFI’s Vutek GS5000r offers eight-colour and Fast-4 print capabilities, so applications requiring higher resolution, such as point-of-sale and commercial graphics, are complemented by the machine’s ultra-fast billboard mode. Intended for distance viewing, the levels of productivity which can be achieved enable jobs to be printed at up to 288m2/hour. The multiple capabilities of the Vutek
GS5000r also make it a popular work-horse solution for users who don’t want to sacrifice quality or speed. Its dual resolutions of 12 picolitre 1,000dpi and 24 picolitre 600dpi, plus its range of print widths, suit all roll-fed applications and these features are complemented by EFI’s UV-curable inks, formulated to be flexible and long-lasting on virtually every roll-fed material likely to be used in a display application.
A point worth noting is that the EFI Vutek GS5000r is the only five metre machine currently backed by 3M’s matched component system warranty (MCS) when co-branded EFI and 3M inks are used on 3M flexible materials. This warranty lasts up to five years and ensures that all output matches its requirements without sacrificing performance.
Without a doubt, EFI’s Vutek GS series of UV- curable printers has impacted on the wide- format digital print sector, with sign-makers, screen-printers, photolabs and general display producers all using the equipment.
Roll with it
Durst is another name which has been around in this sector for many years. The latest machine, the Rho 320R UV inkjet promises a new quality standard for industrial roll to roll printing. It is designed to enable economic printing of offset quality, particularly for large format applications and demanding and profitable applications such as lightbox displays, illuminated posters, window graphics, POP displays and advertising textiles, all of which can be achieved at high quality. Productivity is maximised by the ability to print two rolls side by side up to a width of 160cm each and a further option for perfectly registered doubled sided printing.
Another obvious benefit for this machine is that the Rho Roll inks used in the Rho 320R are environmentally friendly with no VOCs and were the first to be awarded Nordic Swan Environmental Accreditation. Furthermore, the machine offers very economical production with low ink consumption thanks to high pigmented
