One of the first hirers through the doors as the Show opened for business was Francis Harrison of Harrison Tools & Plant Hire, near Godalming, pictured (left) on the Fairport stand.

I like the 8am opening on the first day, as I can make an early start, enjoy four or five hours at the Show and be back at the office for late afternoon. I bought four Fairport compaction plates and a hydraulic breaker. I also purchased a Cormidi tracked high-tip dumper from Ammann Equipment, and after the Show I confirmed an order for two Yanmar ViO25 minis from them. Going to the Show is vital. It’s an opportunity to have an uninterrupted day looking at

new products and cementing relationships with loyal suppliers. And I was delighted that there was such a positive mood amongst exhibitors and visitors, which augurs well for the year ahead.

During his Show visit, Chris Caney (left) of Leighton Buzzard-based Platform Sales & Hire confirmed an order for an Easylift R160 tracked spider access platform with Power Lift UK.

“ Last May we

acquired Bucks Access Rental of Milton Keynes, which has now adopted the Platform Sales & Hire name. This has

considerably expanded our hire fleet to more than 100 machines, comprising chiefly self-propelled and trailer-mounted platforms. We like the compactness and ease of use of the R160, and as soon as it was delivered it went out on a week’s hire for a building cleaning contract. At the Show, I also looked at

compact scissor lift machines available from the various suppliers. It was great being able to compare them all in one place.

With their second depot scheduled to open in Consett in April, Paul Byrne (left) and Mike Simpson (right) from Hexham-based Easy Hire (NE) talked to many exhibitors about their equipment requirements, including Obart Pumps.

We came to the Show with a shopping list for items we needed, such as Obart pumps, Belle mixers, Euro Towers aluminium towers and Takeuchi mini excavators. We are expanding our compact plant fleet, which we will be able to shuttle between the two depots as required. We also touched base with Higher Concept Software. We recently upgraded the Syrinx single-depot package that the business started with, to enable us to link in Consett as well. It was our first visit to the Show and we were really impressed. We will be back next year, perhaps with more staff so that they can learn more about the industry and the suppliers in it.

Ray Woods of Southport Hire Centre was one of the many hirers who made a beeline for the Innovation Zone at the Show to learn about the latest product developments.

There were

some very interesting items in the Zone. I voted for the Zarges Teletower,

which ultimately won, and I bought one off the company’s stand. During my visit, I also purchased more podium steps from Euro Towers, Lifan engines from Midland Power, and I ordered more Dustless Technologies vacuums from the Hire Supply Company. I bought some at last year’s Show and customers love them. The Show is great because it focuses purely on my industry. The timing is also ideal, at the start of the year, before the main hire season gets under way.
