How can it be done?
Division and membership secretaries from across Wales attended NUT Cymru’s first organising and membership conference in Llandrindod Wells in November. They looked at how to get a rep in every school, and shared ideas on organising events to help get members to be active in the union.
For more information on how you can play a part in your NUT division please go to your next divisional meeting, call Lisa Taverner at NUT Cymru on 029 2049 1818, or visitwww.teachers.org.uk/getinvolved.
Twilight training
Over the past year NUT Cymru has been increasing the number of members who are active in the union, and want to become school reps. Popular twilight training sessions have helped new and experienced reps all round Wales to hone their skills.
More are planned in Blaenau Gwent, Bridgend, Conwy, Monmouthshire and Torfaen.
If you are a school rep, or interested in becoming one, and would like training, please contact Lisa Tavener on 029 2049 1818 or email cymru.wales@nut.org.uk.
Young teachers share ideas
Young teachers from all over North Wales attended the first NUT North Wales young teachers’ conference in Llandudno, in January.
Top of the agenda were the potential perils of social networking, focusing on Facebook. Participants also discussed the General Teaching Council for Wales’s new code of conduct, and how to get young teachers actively contributing to NUT policy and campaigns.
A South Wales young teachers’ conference will be held in Swansea in October. To book phone Lisa Taverner at NUT Cymru on 029 2049 1818.
Students show a red card to racism
Show Racism the Red Card’s second conference for teachers of tomorrow was held at the University of Wales Institute, Cardiff, in January. It was sponsored by the NUT and aimed to teach final year students how to deal with racism and religious intolerance in school, and how to teach the wrongs of racism in personal and social education.
The students watched an interactive drama on racism performed by Theatr Fforwm Cymru, followed by workshops.
Further conferences have been organised at Swansea Metropolitan and Caerleon University, Newport. For details, call NUT Cymru on 029 2049 1818.
