Finally, when you back up to online storage with most of these services, you'll not only have access to your files from any Web browser, but with some services, such as SOS and MiMedia, you can share the files to contacts via links in e-mail or even view photos in a web browser. MiMedia goes even beyond this with the ability to play video and music files.

Carbonite 4.0 $54.95/year for one PC -unlimited storage Norton Online Backup $50 for 25GB on up to 5 PCs

Carbonite is a popular and mature online backup service, but it lacks many desirable features you'll find in the competition. It offers unlimited remote backup storage, and handily marks backed-up files in Windows Explorer. It also has a good Mac version and a so-so iPhone app. However, an account only covers one PC and its backup servers aren't geographically redundant, not the best in case of a big disaster. It also lacks file sharing or viewing, live or real-time protection, and doesn't back up external or network drives.

IDrive $4.95/month per PC with 150GB

IDrive offers support for up to five computers in one account, multiple file version saving, a cool web interface and fast operation. However, you can't mix Macs and PCs, and there are still some rough edges with the software, compared with the competition.

SOS Online Backup Home Edition $9.95 a month for five PCs and up to 50GB

SOS offers a bit more than other online backup providers. It supports multiple PC coverage, external and network drive backup, an easy to use local backup app, and an excellent iPhone app. It also offers “Live Protect”, a service that watches folders for file changes and backs them up immediately. In my experience, SOS delivers more than any other online backup service.

As you can see, each program and backup method offers many different backup options. It’s usually best to speak with an IT professional to discuss your specific needs if you aren’t clear about what to do next.

play media files online, and an online “cloud-based” disk drive. MiMedia offers anywhere access to your digital media, a reasonable price and a well-designed and easy to use interface.

MozyHome $54.45/year

Mozy is among the easiest to use and setup. However, it only supports just one computer per account and doesn't let you back up network or removable drives. This keeps it a step, or two, behind the competition.
