ZOGGS FUSION AIR Price: £14.99 Available from:

Kiefer’s optical goggles have not been specifi cally designed for open water swimming but, if you’re normally a glasses wearer and you don’t want to wear contact lenses under your goggles, you may fi nd they solve your vision problems. These are low profi le ‘socket’
goggles, but generously sized and comfortably sealed. The main drawback is the strap, which uses a fragile clip system. You won’t be amused if it breaks seconds before a race (which it might do if you’ve tightened the strap for additional security). However, the strap can easily be replaced by something stronger. The lenses are available with prescriptions from -1.5 to -8 dioptre.

Best for women
A vain attempt to ‘pretty’ up these with glitter doesn’t detract from the fact they are a robust and practical goggle. Like those of their brother style – the Vista (far left) – the lenses have a triangular shape, giving increased vision, although the smaller size of these means they sit more securely on the face. The fl exible nosepiece and quick-fi t buckle make them easily adjustable and very secure fi tting – even for open-water scrums – however it’s advisable to try these before buying as some people report them cutting into low brow bones. Other than that these are a great all- round goggle and not just for girly girls.

contentious issue but the ultra-soft seal on the slim- line Fusion Air means these are more comfortable than they appear. It also eliminates the ‘goggle eye’ markings swimmers get from other pairs. The nose piece is changeable and the double elastic strap is fuss free and secure, with an easy release clip, but you will need to adjust it before swimming. Visibility is surprisingly good. If you’re going to be leading the pack and want to look the part of an elite swimmer, these are worth a try.
Best for choice
If you’re the kind of person who wants everything just so, then you’ll go wild for this pair from Blue Seventy. Available in three different colour frames, four kinds of lenses – yellow, blue, smoke or mirror – and a small or large face size option, there’s a pair to suit any person swimming in a variety of conditions. The moulded rubber eyepieces give great suction and stability, and the nose piece is sturdy. One lone quibble would be that they have less visibility upwards, than some other models, although the horizontal field of vision is excellent.
