that recognizes lodging properties for integrating environmental manage- ment practices that improve overall operations and guest satisfaction. The 143-room hotel was required to demonstrate success in at least one of the following areas: energy conserva- tion; solid waste reduction; effluents and emissions; water conservation; purchasing; and business issues. Hotel Durant, Berkeley’s original full-service, boutique hotel, blends 1920s Spanish Mediterranean archi- tecture with modern conveniences. Green-certified and pet-friendly, the facility completed a multi-million- dollar renovation in 2008 and is a member of Joie de Vivre Hotels, a grassroots organization that strives to have a positive impact on communi- ties. Each member hotel is dedicated to donating at least $200 per guest- room per year to local organizations. The California Hotel & Lodging
Association is the largest state lodging association in the nation. Its national affiliate, the American Hotel & Lodg- ing Association, created the Stars of the Industry awards program more than 40 years ago.
