HEALTHY IN 2011 KEEPING KIDS Proper Immune Function Is the Key by Heather Haynes O
ptimal immune function is the key to keeping your children healthy and happy all year-round. Because more than 50 percent of our immune system is located in the gut, a healthy digestive tract is vital. This year, keep your child’s immune system strong with the following recipes and wellness tips:
•Provide a diet rich in organic whole foods, including fruits, vegetables, whole grains, legumes, nuts and seeds.
•Keep the gut flora healthy with a high-quality probiotic. •Offer filtered water to drink throughout the day. •Incorporate sources of immune-boosting carotenes into the diet, including dark greens, orange and yellow squash, carrots, yams and sweet potatoes.
•Serve foods from the cabbage family to increase immune function, including Brussels sprouts, broccoli, cauliflower, kale and mustard greens.
•Protect children from immune-system “busters”: refined sugar, damaged fats, too much pasteurized dairy, foods that cause sensitivities or allergies, processed foods, pesticides and insecticides and stress.
