Sincheol Kim, Master of Software Engineering, The
University of Adelaide. Sincheol is a software engineer at Travellink Technology under Sealink Travel Group. He came to Australia from South Korea to study, and involved himself in several different community and interest groups to become more comfortable with his new home.
Why did you decide to study and
work in Australia? I wanted to do my masters degree somewhere outside of South Korea where I could not only improve my knowledge of my field of study but also my English. Australia was the perfect fit as it had some of the world-renowned universities and yet the living cost was relatively low compared to that of the USA or UK.
How did networking assist you in gaining your employment at
Travellink Technology? I seriously think that I wouldn’t have been hired if I hadn’t joined my local user group. However, I didn’t join the user group to get a job as such. I just joined the user group to learn more about the programming language and framework that I was using at the university. I think the initiative, that’s what the manager liked about me.
As an international student, what challenges did you face when looking for graduate work in
Australia? Getting a job is kind of closer to a mission impossible if you do not have permanent residency. Many employers wanted more than just a graduate visa which still lets you work in Australia for more than a year. That’s why you really need to have something more than the hard-earned degree.
What advice would you give to international students wanting to secure work in Australia after
graduation? If you want to get a job in Australia, just getting a university degree is not enough. You need to get involved in the industry/community even during the semester. Find out local interest groups of your field of study, join them and be involved in whatever they do. You will learn what you need to do to make yourself more employable.
What are some of the hurdles you were exposed to during
your study? At The University of Adelaide, they expected us to learn a variety of unheard-of new programming languages and technologies in a short period of time. I believe that helped me a lot to overcome the fear of learning new languages and technologies. After all that, I think I now know how to go about learning something totally new and enjoy doing it at the same time.
