Tell us about your internship. During my last semester at uni, I was involved in a four-month internship project where I worked at Momentum Technologies Group as a .Net programmer. This involved the design and development of a Graphical User Interface (GUI) for a visual communication tool for the emergency services. I was involved in creating the project plan, reviewing the requirements, doing a competitive market analysis, researching usability issues and recommendations for the GUI design and layout, coding and the design integration for the project.
How did your degree assist you with gaining employment after
graduation? My degree gave me hands-on knowledge with the technologies being used in the IT industry. More importantly, I was given the opportunity to participate in the internship project, which directly influenced my chances of getting employed. I got work experience in my field and my dedication and hard work during the internship project enabled me to win a permanent position at Momentum Technologies Group.
entail? Currently employed at Village Roadshow Limited, my role involves managing the services-based e-commerce platform, which provides service to MyFun and Village Cinemas (and many more partners). I am directly involved in developing and managing the web- services and database systems. I am also playing a lead role in the integration, development and management of the CMS (Content Management System) and occasionally, I am also involved in application development/ support for Village Cinemas.
What advice would you give to international students who are looking for job opportunities in
Australia? Study hard and have a long-term goal in mind. Concentrate on the course material as that will be the foundation of your career and don’t just focus on trying to work 20 hours (or more) a week. Try to mingle with the local crowd and not just within your own communities as this would lead to higher confidence levels during interviews and a better cultural fit in companies. Learn about the country and the various sports, and learn to enjoy the Aussie way of life!
