Digital Arts Mari Abril is a San Diego-based computer designer specializing in corporate graphics and Web development solutions for a wide rang ss clients. Her projects combine distinctive brand experiences through technological innovation and artful execution.


Robert Dillworth is a Los Angeles-based entertainment industry designer specializing in Web development, special effects graphics and new media design. His creative credits include projects for Sony, Warner Music, Verizon and Qualcomm. He lectures at several California State University campuses on topics covering Web design and commercial graphics


Jill Thayer is owner and art director of Jill Thayer Associates, a full-service graphic communication firm specializing in print and web design for small business and global companies. An award winning designer Jill’s traditional and digital media approaches include projects for a wide clientele including: Nestle Dairies, Buck Owens, Production Company, Disney, Pepsi Cola Bottling Company and NBC.


Human Resources


Lois Hall, M.A., is the founder of Access to Leadership, Lois Hall brings over twenty years of independent and corporate business experience in training, development, coaching and management. She has designed training and coaching programs and facilitated workshops for all levels of employees, with emphasis on skill and career development.


Carolyn Biggs-Harris, CCP, is the owner of CBH Consulting. She has extensive experience in HR management, compensation, benefits, HRIS, payroll, recruitment, training employee counseling and relations. She held the position of Director Worldwide Compensation /Benefits/HRIS for Intel Corporation during several international acquisitions. She is an adjunct instructor with CSU Northridge, California Lutheran University and UOP in Woodland Hills.


Mary Ann Marcuzzi, SPHR, is the HR Manager for Beckman Coulter, Inc., a global biotech company in Carlsbad, and is a “Life Certified” SPHR. She has over 20 years of HR management experience at high tech and healthcare organizations such as Northrup Grumman and Cedars Sinai Medical Center. She has been an adjunct college faculty teaching for the California State University system and Chapman University.


Vickie Motte, MA, has held a variety of generalist and senior level HR positions with organizations in industries such as biotech, education and medical device. Most recently, she was the VP of HR for La Jolla Pharmaceutical Company and is currently the Head of HR for Stone Brewing Company.


Kathy Randle, MBA, MA Education is a training & development professional with expertise in Organizational Development and Instructional Design. She has extensive experience in assessing organizational issues and designing and implementing interventions that close gaps and drive business performance.


Elizabeth Roche, SPHR is Principal of Employers Workforce Relations and is an experienced HR Professional who has operated in both staff positions and advisory capacities. She has particular knowledge of labor law compliance and training. She has extensive experience in being part of an executive team and formulating strategic plans and action plans surrounding effective use of labor in a number of challenging situations.


Toney Shea, MBA, is a Senior Recruiter, for EMC Corporation. He has 14 years of HR and management experience in the software and defense industries, Toney has worked with start-ups, large and small, multinational companies. He has served on the Board of Society of Human Resources and is currently on the board for several non-profit organizations.


Cole Williamson, SPHR, GPHR, is the HR Director at Vertex Pharmaceuticals. He has held board positions with the San Diego Chapter of the SHRM. Cole teaches in several CSUSM HR related programs and is also a Certified Associate Facilitator with Lee Hecht Harrison.


Meeting & Event Planning


Jill Wien Badger graduated from Florida International University’s School of Hospitality Management and has over twenty years of industry experience. A veteran of Hyatt and Westin Hotels & Resorts with experience in food and beverage management, as well as sales and marketing, she has been a contributor of feature articles for The Meeting Professional Magazine and is a frequent guest lecturer of hospitality topics. Marlene Blas, MTA, is the associate director for meetings and events at California Western School of Law and holds a Masters in Tourism Administration from The George Washington University. Current appointments include: Membership Advisory Council for Meeting Professionals International, editorial advisory board for Southern California Meetings + Events Magazine and advisory board for a peer reviewed journal. Blas is a three-time recipient of the Wyndham International-United Airlines Scholarship, and co-authoring of a meetings and events textbook. Marlene is also the Program Advisor for the Meeting & Event Planning Certificate in San Marcos. (San Marcos & Temecula).


Pierre Charmasson, CMP, is currently the Director of Sales for Velocity Audio Visual, Inc., located in San Diego. Pierre has an extensive background in the hospitality industry and is regarded as a well-respected Meeting Professional. Pierre’s list of credits includes Video & Film Producer/ Director, Live Event Producer, Meeting Manager, Professional Auctioneer and Voice-over Talent. An advocate for continuing education, Pierre enjoys sharing his experiences both on and off the air. (San Marcos & Temecula).


Diane Cheryll, CMP, is a Meeting and Event Manager with Experient. Diane has planned and executed over 100 events for Pharmaceutical Companies, Corporate Clients, and Associations for the past six years, averaging three per year outside of the United States. The following are countries where she has planned events: Argentina, Chile, Mexico, Canada, Japan, China, Israel, Greece, France, Portugal, Hungary, and the United Kingdom. Her international experience provides insight into cultural education, food & beverage design, communication, international logistics and on-site execution without speaking the local dialect. Her meeting management experience provides extensive expertise in budget management, creative concepts and overall execution.


Sandra Chong, Esq., is currently Assistant General Counsel for San Diego Unified School District. Prior to that, she worked in two law firms where she successfully represented hotels, meeting event planners, and travel agencies in disputes and litigation. She is a frequent lecturer in hospitality law. She has also organized large scale events for and provided legal advice to the Asian Business Association and San Diego Dragon Boat Team. In 2007, San Diego Metropolitan Magazine recognized her as one of San Diego’s top business and civic leaders with the “40 Under 40” award. (San Marcos & Temecula).


Joan Burns, CSEP, is the Owner of Joan Burns Events and has extensive experience in various areas of meeting and event planning and hospitality. She recently served on the Board of Directors for the San Diego Chapter of the International Special Event Society and has developed training for companies in the hotel industry. Joan has been contracted as a business developer, project manager and event coordinator for social and corporate events. (San Marcos & Temecula).


Ed Nestfield, CMP, is the Director of Catering & Events for Kimpton Hotels & Restaurants. He is an accomplished leader with more than 10 years of event management experience consistently increasing sales, from conferences to conventions to concerts and catered events. He has a demonstrated track record of managing large scale events and budgets in excess of $1.5 million, including hiring, training and leading a staff of up to 45 employees.


Joe Viña, CMP, is Vice President & Managing Director, International at Conference Direct with over 20 years in the Hospitality industry. Joe also is a consultant/speaker/facilitator with Master Connections Associates and teaches CMP courses at various California Universities. Joe has been an active member of several industry related associations including (SITE), (MPI), (ASAE) and (NBTA) where he has dedicated more than 12 years of volunteered time to board appointed positions. Nursing


Deborah Bennett, RN, MSN, has been an educator for over 20 years at both the community college and baccalaureate level. She has had 35 years of experience in clinical practice. Her primary expertise in pediatric nursing, however she has had clinical experience and has taught both Maternal/Child Health and basic Medical/Surgical Nursing. Over the past three years she has focused on development of the Nursing Skills Laboratory and the Simulation program at California State University San Marcos School of Nursing. She has become the School of Nursing’s expert on clinical simulation and the design and implementation of simulation scenarios.


Dr. Denise Boren taught nurses in the acute care setting for 24 years and has been teaching in academia for the past two years. Her clinical expertise is in cardiovascular nursing, particularly chronic heart failure. Prior to coming to CSUSM School of Nursing, she was a nurse scientist for five years. Her research is focused on chronic heart failure in women, caregivers of women with chronic heart failure, health partnership, and program evaluation of a heart failure clinic. She is an associate investigator on several funded studies and has served on three Master’s thesis and three doctoral dissertation committees. She developed several undergraduate courses and currently teaches health assessment, health promotion and patient teaching strategies, medical- surgical nursing, nursing research and community health nursing for undergraduates. Her international work focuses on palliative care for HIV/AIDS clients, and education of nurses to advance practice and build capacity in two African countries. Her clinical practice includes serving as a CNS in a chronic heart failure clinic.


Dr. JoAnn Daugherty has been practicing nursing since 1982. Her clinical focus has been critical care nursing, with emphasis on management of the patient with cardiopulumonary disorder such as acute coronary syndrome and acute respiratory failure. Her doctoral studies broadened her perspective from critical care to chronic disease management in cardiovascular health issues such as hyperlipidemia and chronic heart failure. She has been involved in nursing education for 19 years in both staff development and academic settings. She has taught critical care nursing to undergraduate students since 1989, mentored graduate students as a preceptor during education practicums/ residencies and served on two thesis committees. Her past research interest have included cardiovascular patient care topics. Her current research interests include looking at teaching methodologies in nursing education.
