Message From the Dean

It seems particularly apt that I am introducing myself to you in the Spring 2012 catalog. Spring signifies new growth and since my arrival just this past August, it is the recent new growth in programs and the new growth I see on the horizon that excites me most. I am fortunate to be the Dean of Extended Learning and surrounded by a talented team here in the department. As well, I am pleased to be working with a phenomenal team of staff and faculty across this fine institution, and with what I consider to be the best leadership in the nation.

In whatever program you participate, I’m confident you will feel our passion for and dedication to lifelong learning. In fact, Extended Learning’s solid history of offering quality degree programs, non-credit programming, and enrichment courses, was one of the qualities that attracted and motivated me most to join the team here at CSUSM.

Annually, Extended Learning assists over 5,000 students. These students enroll in degree programs on the main campus in San Marcos or at our Temecula campus; participate in Osher classes at one of 14 regional locations; and take workforce and non-credit courses to upgrade skills or change careers. We are proud to offer so many options to the community at large, students from CSUSM and other area higher education institutions, members of the military, government service employees, and working professionals.

Our commitment to serving a broad audience and developing diverse programs that meet educational needs will continue. The Osher program has grown to over 600 members taking classes in 14 locations around the region, and is actively seeking to grow to 1,000 members or more. Our CSUSM Temecula Campus is launching its seventh cohort in Nursing and second cohort in Kinesiology and between December, 2011 and May, 2012 alone, over 100 students will graduate from Temecula degree programs. We also look forward to the launch of the Bachelor of Science in Business Administration (BSBA) at the Temecula Campus in Fall 2012 and the Master of Business Administration (MBA) in Fall 2013.

There is always room for additional growth and improvement. Thus, I encourage you to contact me to ask questions, offer thoughts, share ideas, or to simply say hello. And, on behalf of our faculty, staff and administration, I proudly welcome you to California State University San Marcos. GO COUGARS!

that built one of the first computer software programs. After traveling the world for twelve years post retirement, Sunny began to trade the stock market, and to date has written five best selling books on the subject. Sunny has also created a Web site around her mission to educate people on how to trade stocks - moneymentor.com. The skills she has developed through the digital arts certificate program have helped her with her Web site endeavor. “I enjoy math and art,” explains Sunny, and in her opinion, digital arts are really the intersection of the two disciplines. “The instructors for the program are fantastic,” says Sunny, “and the

classes really give you the beyond the basics.” But as Liam qualifies, “they are taught in a way that anyone could learn it.”
