Autism Spectrum Disorder Added Authorization Program Overview


Program Courses


Autism Spectrum Disorder Added Authorization program responds to the need for special educators who are not yet authorized to teach students with ASD to obtain the mandatory authorization. CSUSM is one of several CSU campuses and other universities that have taken the lead to offer the ASD Added Authorization. Te courses will examine characteristics, assessments, instruction and diverse supports for students with ASD. Participants will have the opportunity to share and learn from one another their successes in supporting students on the autism spectrum.


Audience


Te program is designed for educators who are not yet authorized to teach students with Autism Spectrum Disorder.


Program Logistics Te Added Authorization consists of two courses, each worth three academic units. Each course will is offered as a hybrid of face-to- face and online meetings. Upon completion of the coursework, the candidate may apply for the authorization from the California Commission on Teacher Credentialing (CTC) through the College of Education’s Student Services Center.


Academic Credit


Academic units earned in this program can be applied to CSUSM’s Masters of Arts in Education.


Together these courses examine characteristics, assessments, instruction, and diverse supports (inclusive of AAC and other technological supports) for students with ASD and directly meet the new ASD AA standards


EDEX 636 – Contemporary Professional Issues: Research and Best Practice Seminar - Autism Spectrum Disorder (3 semester units)


Examines current issues, concepts, and emerging best practices and research findings related to the education of learners with mild, moderate, and severe disabilities and other dimensions of language and learning differences and, in particular, individuals with Autism Spectrum Disorder.


EDEX 637 – Technology and Communication for Special Populations: Autism Spectrum Disorder Emphasis (3 semester units)


Contemporary information and issues for education and agency personnel regarding the use of technologies inclusive of augmentative and alternative communication methods for students with disabilities and other communication challenges. Emphasis is on supporting individuals with Autism Spectrum Disorder. Requires laboratory work.
