DEGREE PROGRAM The Program


Master of Science in Nursing (MSN) Advanced Public Health Nurse


The MSN program is a part-time program designed for the working RN who holds a baccalaureate degree in nursing. The program may be completed in 8 semesters if the part-time option is selected; 2 years if the full-time option is selected.


Students will have the option to pursue one of six concentrations/specialties:


Nursing Education


The Nursing Education concentration offers the student courses in the theories of adult learning, curriculum design and development, and classroom and online teaching strategies.


Clinical Nurse Specialist


The Clinical Nurse Specialist concentration prepares the student for advanced practice nursing through courses in advanced assessment, advanced pathophysiology/pharmacology and advanced practice management of the chronically ill in the acute care and community settings. Students in the Clinical Nurse Specialist concentration may specialize in one of two tracks:Pediatrics or Gerontology. Students will complete 500 hours of advanced field study and will be eligible to sit for the National certification exam upon completion of the MSN program.


Clinical Nurse Leader


The Clinical Nurse Leader concentration prepares the student to be a leader, manager, and educator at the unit level. The Clinical Nurse Leader role is learned through courses in health systems leadership, quality improvement, evaluation and accreditation in nursing organizations, financial resource management, and management of patients in the acute care setting. Students in the Clinical Nurse Leader concentration may specialize in Gerontology or Education.


Family Nurse Practitioner


The Family Nurse Practitioner is an advanced practice registered nurse who delivers health care to individuals of all ages and their families throughout the lifespan. Family Nurse Practitioners serve as primary health care providers in a variety of settings. The Family Nurse Practitioner operates in independent and collaborative practices in caring for patients and their families in the community. This includes skills in health assessment, diagnosis, health promotion, disease prevention, and management of common acute and chronic illnesses. Upon completion of course work student will be eligible for the AACN credentialing exam and California NP licensure and certification.


The Advanced Public Health Nurse is an advanced practice registered nurse who delivers health care by assessing communities and populations, identifying high risk groups, and developing culturally-sensitive, acceptable and realistic community nursing services in partnership with the communities they are working with. The Advanced Public Health Nurse focuses on population-level health, wellness, and health promotion and disease prevention. This includes skills in community and population assessment; complex project and program management; health services research; and health policy analysis. Students will be eligible to sit for the ANCC credentialing exam and California CNS certification.


Family Psychiatric Mental Health Nurse Practitioner


The psychiatric-mental health nurse practitioner is an advance practice registered nurse who focuses clinical practice on individuals, families, or populations across the life span at risk for developing and/or having a diagnosis of psychiatric disorders or mental health problems. The psychiatric-mental health nurse practitioner is a specialist who provides primary mental health care to patients seeking mental health services in a wide range of settings. This includes the assessment diagnosis and management of mental health problems and psychiatric disorders. Upon completion of the program students will be eligible for the ANCC credentialing exam and California NP Certification.


Prerequisites:


• BSN degree from a CCNE or NLN accredited programs


• Minimum GPA of 3.0 in the last 60 units of undergraduate course work


• Evidence of satisfactory completions of undergraduate or graduate level bioethics, inferential statics, and nursing research with a grade of “C” or better


• Proof of licensure as a California Registered Nurse


• A current resume


• Two Letters of Reference from undergraduate nursing faculty and nursing supervisor


• 1-2 pages essay outlining professional and educational goals


Application fee: $50 Application deadlines: Rolling Admissions


Units: 45 – 58, depending on the concentration


Location: CSUSM Fee: $550 per unit, plus student fees
