Master of Arts in Education, Communicative Sciences & Disorders Option Prerequisite Courses*
The MA in Education with the Option in Communicative Sciences and Disorders program will prepare students for practice in the field of speech-language pathology. This cohort-based program (with a new cohort beginning each fall) has a focus on practice in the public schools, but will prepare individuals to practive across the entire scope of the field. The program utilizes the latest technology in speech language pathology, and includes 400 hours of supervised hours in a community based practice to prepare participants for their career. Graduate students will develop skills and knowledge in all aspects of practice related to:
• Assessment and treatment of individuals across the lifespan with a broad array of communication and swallowing disorders, including: articulation, phonological, fluency, voice, motor speech, language, dysphagia and cognitive-linguistic disorders.
• Response-to-Intervention and Relationship- based Intervention approaches to treating individuals with communication disorders.
• Counseling, augmentative communication and aural rehabilitation
• Evidenced-based practice in the field
After successfully completing all of these components, the candidate will be eligible for state licensure, CTC credentialing and ASHA certification.
Prerequisites
• Satisfaction of general admission requirements for graduate studies at CSUSM
• Bachelor’s degree, including undergraduate coursework in basic science (as required for the prerequisites)
• A minimum undergraduate (or last 60 units) grade point average of 3.0
• Completion of prerequisite courses • Certificate of Clearance • Basic Skills Requirement
• Two letters of recommendation: one from an academic source and one from a professional source
• Personal essay

NOTE: Candidates who meet the requirements will be invited for an interview with a panel of faculty. This interview is an opportunity to ensure this program is a good match for the participant and vice versa.
