This mural is painted on two pieces of tex- taline (vinyl mesh close up picture below) they add up to a canvas size of 13.3 feet wide by 6.3h feet high. I have strapped them tightly to a stud frame in my garage. They are de greased thoroughly and I be- gin the painting process using an acrylic sign enamel. Textaline is used so parents can see into the play structure to see their children. Generally it’s wrapped around a play area which is filled with plastic balls the kids jump into.
First, I roughly sketch out the design work- ing out the composition; I use a grease pencil to do this. I also sketch out the pyramid building, for this I use a picture and my projector. The tree and charac- ters I’m able to free hand later (organic items don’t have to be so precise). I then start to paint in the sky. After the sky I add different shades of green to render the background foliage... make sure to start with a light green first and work towards the foreground using darker green and a crisper edge (tonal perspective). Another tip here is to add some blue to your green to give the dark shadowy effect. In hind- sight I could have darkened up the foli- age behind the blue bird hanging from the branch, adding more contrast would have helped to make him pop.
