It is said that educators want qualifications and employers prefer skills. In truth, it is often the individual employee who wants the qualification as a measure of their achievement. Anyone who has completed a vocational qualification will tell you how much the process develops their confidence and understanding of their work. Qualifications are vital benchmarks for both employee and employer and used in all recognised professions.


In the past two years, a range of qualifications have been developed which are important tools for developing skills, particularly for managers of the future. These programmes include the Cleaning and Support Services Apprenticeship at Level 2 and the Certificate in Cleaning Supervision at Level 3 (for more on this, see the careers section of the Asset Skills website.


The Virtual Academy to support training delivery There have been many training providers, both further education colleges and private companies, involved in the delivery of cleaning training and qualifications. Some of


the quality has been variable and the coverage of delivery nationwide has been patchy. Following consultation with the industry, it became clear that cleaning was not an area of priority for many training providers.


With a full suite of qualifications for the cleaning sector to promote to both employers and training providers, Asset Skills recognises that provision in this area needs to be improved.


This has also been true for facilities management, which is a related business area for many cleaning employers, and often a progression route for cleaning staff.


To address some of the inconsistencies in training delivery, Asset Skills created its Virtual Academy for Business Services in conjunction with employers. The Academy is developing a national network of training providers who want to prioritise the delivery of qualifications.


The Academy has initially focused on delivery of the FM Apprenticeship but is now turning attention to cleaning provision and particularly support for
