Impulsively and possessively, I
told Dave I would like to write the article, with the blessings of editor Sammy Reese, of course. I am not a writer, but a photographer, so when Sammy gave his gracious consent, which by the way was not expected, the thought of such an oblique chal- lenge on a visceral level at least, felt darn good! My fi rst encounter with Dave
Lauck centered on the AR-15 plat- form, specifi cally the Extreme Duty Magazines with cast aluminum pull handles. I called Dave to inquire about the mags and was immediately taken in by his kindness and sincere passion for the work he was produc- ing. Our next encounter would be one year later.

One afternoon, I sent out a query
to some top pistolsmiths to see if I could help with their photography needs. A few moments later I received a call from Dave Lauck, asking for the FFL of where I wanted to pick up the guns. Transferring fi rearms can be time consuming especially in a high-volume store. Filling out the paperwork on each shipment allows plenty of time for the sales people and customers to get all googly-eyed and have their questions answered. Dave’s shipment certainly got every- one’s attention. In the shipped case was a little pis-
ton driven .223 carbine that was light as a feather, with a gray ceramic fi n- ish, the signature D&L stock and a shortened version of the rugged tubu-
lar handguard (which bolts on) with several small rails attached for acces- sories. There was also a Black Profes- sional Model .45 superbly dehorned with a ceramic fi nish displaying the D&L monogram on the machined black Aluma Grips. Also included was a 7" heavy-duty service knife Dave meticulously machined out of aluminum specifi cally to be used as a prop for the photograph. Of course, all of the required accessories: sights, rail lights and those great extreme- duty magazines were included.

packed and examined all of the items in the D&L shipment. Every item was masterfully fi tted, fi nished and
