Stamping out illegal instruction
Illegal driving instruction continues to be a problem on our roads. Learner drivers are putting their safety in the hands of unlicensed strangers - people who may have convictions, may never have been properly trained as a driver trainer and who don't have the correct motor insurance. The potential risks are huge, and we need your help to continue the fight against illegal instruction.
Andy Rice, head of DSA's fraud and integrity team, is passionate about combating the problem: "ADIs are our eyes and ears; we need you to keep reporting anyone you suspect of teaching illegally.
"To help us build a picture of an individual's activities, it's essential that people continue to report the details."
If you suspect someone of illegal instruction, the following information is important to DSA:
- name (if known) and description of the individual
- make, model, colour and registration of the vehicle<
- if the vehicle has any livery, markings, roof box
- location, dates and times
Andy stresses that there's no such thing as too much information - every detail is important. The fraud and integrity investigators work together with road policing units around the country to combat illegal instruction. Often, the police continue the work on DSA's behalf - if we can provide the police with information on days, times and routes used by rogue instructors, resources can be targeted at finding them and getting them off the roads.
If you suspect someone of instructing illegally, you can contact the fraud and integrity team on 029 2058 1155 (during office hours), or on 029 2058 1290 (out of hours). Or email details to integrity.team@dsa.gsi.gov.uk.
