Driver CPC - don't get left by the wayside
Since the introduction of the Driver Certificate of Professional Competence (CPC) in 2008, nearly three million hours of periodic training have been undertaken by drivers in the bus, coach and haulage industries. Although pleased with the initial take up, DSA is urging drivers to plan their training in good time.

Jill Lewis, director of driver learning and development at DSA, said: "If drivers do leave their periodic training until the final year of the acquired rights period, there is a serious risk that the training industry will not be able to meet demand."

Those employers and drivers who have started their periodic training are already seeing the benefits.

"The feedback we are receiving from drivers is very positive" said Stephen Smith, company trainer at DSV Road. "All our drivers can, hand on heart, say they did learn something. If drivers learn one thing that stops them receiving a graduated fixed penalty, or ultimately saves a life, then it's not a waste of time."

"As a result of Driver CPC training, one of my clients has noticed a reduction in tacho errors by a good 50 per cent" - Allison Kemp, AIM Commercial Services Ltd.
