WELCOME

How many times have you heard or read the line “must have work experience”? Yet how do you get work experience when nobody seems to want to give you a job? It’s the biggest hurdle for anyone leaving university – to get that elusive experience.

However, there are ways in which you can get placements and experience. Many degrees now offer sandwich courses and industrial years as part of the course – of course the onus is on you to secure a work placement, but there are plenty of companies that have internships and placements on offer, many of which you’ll fi nd in the pages of this magazine.

There are also plenty of opportunities to gain experience, whether you’re opting for a gap year after university, or are simply still deciding on your dream job after you graduate.

It’s then up to you to ensure you make the most of the opportunities on offer and also understand how you can apply any work you do or experience you get – no matter how long or short, no matter how relevant it seems – to what you can offer a potential employer.

Visit the National Work Placement Exhibition on 28 October 2010 at Birmingham’s NEC for a range of specialised advice on getting a work placement and making the most of your experience. With a CV Clinic and programme of free presentations, as well as an array of employers offering work placement opportunities and advice, it makes an invaluable visit for anyone looking to gain a place- ment or internship. Full details of what’s going on at the show can be found on page 7.
