Ronald McDonald House Student-Athlete of the Week


Duke senior Becci Burling has been named the Ronald McDonald House Charities Student-Athlete of the Week after leading the Blue Devils to a pair of 3-0 sweeps over North Carolina and N.C. State in Cameron Indoor Stadium on Oct. 8-9. A 6-1 middle blocker, Burling hit .429 and aver- aged 3.50 kills for the weekend as Duke (15-2, 7-0 ACC) stayed undefeated in the ACC. Against two of the top de- fensive teams in the conference, Burling made only three attack errors on 42 attacks.

Countdown to Craziness The Duke men’s basketball team tips off the 2010-11 season on Friday, Oct. 15 with the second an-


nual Countdown to Craziness. For the second consecutive year, ESPNU and former Duke great Jason Williams will be on hand to cover the events as part of its four-hour Midnight Madness Special. “Countdown to Craziness was a huge success last year and we are really excited to start this season


with another great event,” said head coach Mike Krzyzewski. “Friday is going to be a special night for our players, coaches, fans and everyone involved with Duke basketball. We are looking forward to hitting the floor in Cameron and feeling the building shake in anticipation for the 2010-11 season.” Countdown to Craziness will feature live music, inflatable games, highlight videos honoring past cham-


pions and the Duke basketball tradition, videos by Duke University Improv, live performances and on-court contests as well as the annual Blue-White scrimmage and a dunk contest. In addition, Duke will unveil the 2010 National Championship banner and members of the 2009-10 Blue Devils will receive their champion- ship rings as part of a ceremony honoring last year’s NCAA title team.

Duke Returns From Bye Week Duke is coming off a bye week and will take on Miami at 1:00 p.m. in Wallace Wade Stadium on October 16. The Blue Devils (1-4, 0-2 ACC) are looking to end a four-game losing streak and capture their first ACC win of the year while the Hurricanes (3-2, 1-1 ACC) are fresh off a 45-17 loss to Florida State last weekend. Under Cutcliffe, Duke is 2-1 when following a bye week.


Duke vs. Miami Saturday’s game will mark the eighth on the gridiron between the two schools, with Miami holding a 6-1 all-time series advan- tage. The first game in the series came on October 9, 1976 with Duke posting a 20-7 victory on the road. The Hurricanes have won six straight games in the series. While an assistant coach at Tennessee, Duke head coach David Cutcliffe recruited Mi- ami head coach Randy Shannon out of Nor- land High School in Miami. Shannon matriculated to the University of Miami. Miami assistant coach Aubrey Hill served as an assistant coach on the Duke staff from 1999-03. Miami assistant coach Rick Petri served on Cutcliffe’s staff at Ole Miss from 1998-04, coaching alongside current Duke aides Ron Middleton, Mar- ion Hobby, Jim Knowles, Kurt Roper, Matt Luke, Zac Roper and Derek Jones.


Duke Honors 1960 Cotton Bowl Team Duke will honor the 1960 Blue Devil team that defeated Arkansas, 7-6, in the Cotton Bowl. The 1960 squad won the ACC championship under head coach Bill Murray and went 8-3 on the year.
