NINE TELECOM IN FCS ALLIANCE TO RECRUIT CHANNEL ARMY

NINE Telecom Group has joined forces with the Federation of Communication Services (FCS) to help protect the interests of the channel in the face of new indus- try legislation and regulation.

Burning issues include Next

Generation Access Voice and European Directives on contract length in the telecoms industry. Nine Telecom is seeking dealer and reseller recruits to join its

‘Channel Army’ and will subsidise FCS membership fees and provide access to FCS code of practice ser- vices for partners who join up. James Palmer, CEO of Nine Telecom, said: “It is vitally impor-

tant that we increase the FCS membership. Together we can ensure that the channel’s views and interests are well represented in all of the regulatory and legislative forums that affect our industry.”

SPECIAL REPORT

IN A FULL bloodied Lancastrian battle that proved a fitting finale to one of the best ever soccer Comms Dealer Five-a-Side football tournaments, Chorley-based Elite Telecom overcame Shine Telecom on penalties to win the 2010 trophy. But the real winner was the Sparks Children’s Charity which netted £5,500 from the day’s proceeds. The tournament, held at the Goals soccer centre in Leicester on September 15th, was generously sponsored by Daisy, which entered four teams. For all the results and more pictures see pages 54-55.

THE Coalition Government’s con- troversial Spending Review may create more opportunities than pain for resellers in the ICT sector, according to the bullish views of some channel players ahead of the Treasury’s October 20th spending squeeze announcement. Strong signals that public sector bodies could see new technology as part of the solution to bring- ing down spending were confirmed by Vodafone’s Enterprise Director, Peter Kelly, who said his company has met with the Government on several occasions. “We have an amazing capabil- ity to bring to the public sector through solutions like home work- ing, flexible working and the ability to reduce facilities through shared work spaces,” he commented. Tom Maxwell, Dealer Sales

Director at Nimans, also noted: “Resellers that can offer managed services may find themselves a lot busier over the next 12 months.” And there are no signs of chan- nel players planning to retract

their businesses in preparation for tougher times ahead. “I am recruiting,” said Wayne

Cartwright, MD of Manchester- based Communicate Better. “My business plan hasn’t changed. It may just take a bit longer to get to where I want to be.” Karen Ullah, Sales Director at

Daisy, is equally bullish about her firm’s prospects. “We have a sales force of 180 across all channels and to meet our new business sales tar- gets for the next six months we are recruiting 28 more,” she stated. Meanwhile, Coalition plans

to reform the way public sector contracts are rewarded could help channel companies. “Work is underway to simplify and standardise procurement pro- cesses in order to reduce com- plexity and cost,” commented a Government spokesperson. “This will also assist SMEs and civil society organisations in com- peting for public contracts, and help to deliver the Government’s aspiration of 25% of business being awarded to SMEs.” Spending cuts report – page 22

FCS CEO, Jacqui Brookes, OBE, added: “FCS is commission- ing research to ensure that the value of this contribution and the needs of resellers are fully recognised by government and the regulator.”
