Balancing Air Quality with Durability

FACT:
About 90% of the VOCs released by alkyd paints enter the air during the first 10 hours after painting. But health-threatening “aldehyde” emissions can continue for more than 120 hours—even after odors have dissipated.

FACT:
Latex paints contain less VOC content than alkyd paints, but VOCs from latex paint may continue to offgass for up to 3.5 years when painted over gypsum board.

FACT:
A paint that is “low VOC” may still be releasing HAPs, or hazardous air pollutants. It’s important to know what replaced those VOCs in the mix.

FACT:
Blistering of paint on wood siding sometimes originates from inside the home—when water vapor from moist areas such as bathrooms is allowed to saturate the wood.
