Protect From the Top Down
FACT:
Clay tile and slate roofs can last for hundreds of years. Typically, it’s the underlayment—the material beneath the roofing—that fails long before the tiles or slates wear out.
FACT:
An analysis of light-colored roofs in 11 U.S. metropolitan areas by the Heat Island Group of Lawrence Berkeley National Laboratory found energy-saving potentials of about $175 million per year.
FACT:
About 10 million tons of used asphalt shingles end up in U.S. landfills each year, while 500 million tons of asphalt pavement are produced each year.
FACT:
The asphalt in wornout roofing shingles is harder than highway asphalt, so only 5% of the final road mix may come from recycled asphalt roof shingles.
