Swedish cuppa

Malmö Aviation, one of the leading domestic flight operators in Sweden, is using Solo Cup’s BrandbuilderTM bespoke printed hot paper cups in a waste-reduction initiative. According to the airline, it is using approximately 50 per cent less food packaging on its daytime flights, by using the cups as ‘more than a cup’. The 10z Malmö Aviation-branded cups each contain a sandwich, a stirrer and napkins sealed in a flowpack bag, enabling the airline to dispense with the traditional box and disposables. Initially, the airline has introduced the new meal service format on its daytime flights between 0900 and 1500, flying more than 750,000 people every year between these hours. Malmö Aviation provides a complimentary meal or snack on all of its services. Says Tony Waters, managing director of Solo Cup Europe: “We’re hoping that more airlines will follow the lead of Malmö Aviation – the potential reduction in waste packaging is huge.” www.solocupeurope.co.uk

Kosher in Bangkok

Bangkok Air Catering has 20 airline customers for whom it is producing an average of 15,000 meals each day. The facility’s md, Linus Knobel, is constantly upgrading and re-thinking ways to improve his services and this month reports on the worldwide success of his kosher kitchen headed up by Chef Veerasak Chansrisuk. BAC’s kosher kitchen was built, not only to serve

ELAL Israel Airlines, but also for niche production including frozen kosher meals. The kosher client market is expanding dramatically, according to Linus, who is currently exporting frozen kosher meals worldwide. BAC’s frozen kosher box is classified into two specific products, Premium and Standard. The Premium Kosher Box features a variety of dishes using fine ingredients and the Standard Kosher Box has been created with a more budget-friendly specification, intended to attract customers who are looking for competitive prices or have different culinary needs. BAC’s kosher mealbox customers include Emirates Flight Catering (DXB), Qatar Airways (DOH), Air Berlin (DUS and TXL), Gate Gourmet (MNL and HKG), LSG Sky Chefs (BKK and HKG), British Airways (BKK via LSG catering), Qantas (BKK via THAI Catering), Oberoi (BOM, DEL, MAA), Gastro Primo (HKG), Macroasia Catering (MNL), Beijing Rainbow Trading (PEK) and Beijing Air Catering (PEK).
