are awaiting its response in order to move forward with next steps including the selection of representatives from each organisation. The Board is finalising IFSA representatives to serve on this task force who will evaluate the potential benefits of a closer alignment of our organisations and the various components that would need to be considered for closer alignment. We will be providing you, our members, with findings as they develop. The results of their findings, though not binding, will allow for clear reasoning and a thorough analysis by both Boards.”

“This year’s event attracted a record number of delegates and exhibitors keen to look at all aspects of the airline passenger experience”

Paul Foley, executive vp and ceo of Mesa

Airlines, spoke about the state of the airline industry in the US where federal taxes make up a huge amount of the ticket price. Although planes are full, they are carrying low-paying passengers which, combined with the high cost of fuels is making recovery for US airlines very tough. Rob Britton of AirLearn gave us all plenty

of food for thought in his presentation. He encouraged us all to take on a new approach and think how we should be doing things differently. Unlike any other market sector, air travel is produced and consumed simultaneously. Plenty of factors are beyond our control such as weather, air traffic control and airport infrastructure. The industry has advanced in every sector except speed – which hasn’t changed for fifty years. Airline safety is a spectacular success. The lively panel of logistics experts discussed the challenge of getting product in the right place at the right time while achieving savings. The simple key is planning and that includes taking into consideration planning for peak times such as Christmas. Every single process has to be mapped

IFSA President’s Award Congratulations to the winner of this year’s IFSA’s President’s Award which went to LSG Sky Chefs Global Director Ramp Safety/Director of Employee Safety and Ramp Safety North America, Carlos Romero. The Award recognises an individual or group member of IFSA who has made remarkable efforts in overall service and demonstrated dedication to the onboard services industry. Popular runners up this year were Hideo Miyabe of TFK Corporation and AMI Inflight’s Denise Poole.

Chef’s Competition This year’s Chef’s Competition organised by Gate Gorumet executive chef Bob Rosar, was as rigorous as ever, taking place at the Flying Food Kitchen. Sponsored by Marfo, four chefs from Northern Foods, Flying Food Group, Gate Gourmet and LSG Skychefs were tested on all aspects of their profession. People’s Choice winner was Chef Gary from Northern Foods but the overall winner was LSG Skychefs executive chef, Clifton Lyles.

A message from ITCA Stephen White, ITCA president, had to sadly forgo the IFSA conference in Long Beach this year, due to a long term engagement. Stephen was actually in Greece for Nina Harman’s (Food By Design MD) wedding. He was giving Nina away. Said Stephen: “A wonderful time was had by

ITCA chairman, David Young and two vice presidents, Kevin Cox and Martyn Jelley attended on my behalf. Vicky Stennes, IFSA president, and I will be making an announcement shortly regarding the setting up of a task force”.
