Preparing for the upturn
We seem to be getting mixed messages from airlines and their suppliers as reports come through from different world sectors. What we do know is
that the market is coming back faster than anticipated and that we are seeing 100s of new generation aircraft entering the market place. According to the International Air Transport Authority (IATA), the 2010 profit forecast is three times the US$2.5billion predicted only three months ago. “It is much stronger than forecast, but it’s no time for a big celebration, just a small party,” said Giovanni Bisignani, IATA’s director general. As the industry meets at ITCA Dubai we can witness for ourselves the exciting growth in the region with announcements of new onboard product from Oman Air and Saudia, and record orders from Emirates for the A380 and Boeing 777. Launch of the Dreamliner has the green light for early 2011 with over 860 orders. Further confirmation from IATA tells us that North Africa, China and India are
not far behind as their economies see a rapid revival. In the US we are seeing the likes of Continental and Delta going ‘flat out’ with their onboard product while in Europe Air France, Alitalia and British Airways are investing for the long term. All in all, an exciting time and one which will most especially be welcomed
by caterers and suppliers who will enjoy the opportunity to put quality back on board. After all, none of us want to be left standing, or do we? Sue and I look forward to seeing you in Dubai.
