Catering for Kenya
In August, Servair announced it was establishing itself in Kenya with the catering company NAS, which has two production units in Nairobi and Mombasa. The company says that the Kenyan acquisition strengthens its position as Africa’s leading caterer. The 9600 sq m Nairobi unit employs 900 people
and produces 10,000 meals per day for 15 airlines. Its clients include Kenya Airways, Emirates, British Airways and KLM. The Mombasa unit is located in the bay of the Indian Ocean and its activities include maritime transport services as well as airline catering. It covers 5000 sq m and employs 100 people preparing 1000 meal trays per day for nine airlines including Air Condor and Kenya Airways. “This acquisition marks Servair’s arrival in two fast-growing Kenyan cities and strengthens our position as the catering leader on the African continent,” says chairman and ceo Patrick Alexandre. In addition, Servair is actively pursuing its growth and partnership strategy in Africa and is preparing to open new sites in Congo, Ghana, Guinea and Equatorial Guinea. The company now has 13 African production
units.

Website on the move Wi-fi on the rails
Qatar Airways has partnered with Mobiqa, a mobile content optimisation company, to launch a mobile version of the Qatar Airways website. The new mobile website gives travellers
easy access to the most popular services of
qatarairways.com through their internet-enabled mobile device. It provides access to online functions such as flight check-in, flight status information, seat selection, travel and important airline information. Users can also sign up to receive the latest flight offers from Qatar Airways and can receive their boarding pass directly to the mobile phone. System technology contains device-specific recognition that automatically adjusts the site depending on the device being used, without the need to download an application or make changes to the handset. The airline already offers passengers the option of having their boarding pass sent straight to their mobile device following online check-in up to 36 hours in advance. With the launch of the new mobile website, passengers can check-in on-the- go, using the web browser on their mobile device. * Qatar Airways’ fleet is set to rise to 120 aircraft

Amtrak is now offering free wi-fi to all passengers on its high-speed Acela Express trains between Washington DC and Boston, and plans to expand the service to other routes. The AmtrakConnectSM service has been available to customers since March, when a three- month customer satisfaction trial programme began. Recent surveys reveal that 39 per cent of Acela Express passengers per month logged on, a total of 115, 000. In addition, 76 per cent of those polled had a favourable opinion of the service and with overall system performance. “We’ve had tremendous positive passenger response to having wi-fi available onboard and keeping it free of charge will support increased ridership growth,” said Matt Hardison, Amtrak chief, sales distribution and customer service, noting planned upgrades to the existing service include increased bandwidth to allow for greater access to video files. Extension of the service is expected to begin by late autumn and will start with Amtrak California routes, followed by the Northeast regional service. In addition, AmtrakConnect is available for all Amtrak passengers within stations at Washington, Baltimore, Wilmington, Philadelphia, New York, Providence, and Route 128 Station in Boston. It is also offered in all ClubAcela lounges in Washington DC, Philadelphia, New York, and Boston.
