Future Vision: See It Here and Now… the future?
D.J. Burgess: Challenging, excit- ing; truly an honor to serve these two outstanding organizations and the industry during these times of change! I’ve had mixed emotions this past year, during the most historic time economically in the print communi- cations business. It’s tough to watch the struggles and challenges brought on – and the companies which have been hit hard. On the other hand, as printing evolves with higher forms of communication, there’s tremendous opportunity and evolving technolo- gies that allow our member companies and their customers to better compete globally and transform their business- es to respond to the new opportunities of integrated multimedia manufac- turing, higher levels of automation, content management and the need for creative fullfilment services. Show Daily: Changing can be dif-
ficult. What is your advice to firms in the midst of this ‘communication evolution,’ as you’ve called it? D.J. Burgess: This show is a great opportunity for people to walk the floor and imagine a path to the future. With some 500 exhibitors, the features and benefits of today’s innovations and evolving technologies are right before your eyes, with demonstrations of proven and real ROI—process inte- gration, software, workflow solutions, automation and digital technologies. I advise show-goers to not only focus on their immediate needs, but also to step back and see the path of evolu-
tion and revolution, in some cases, of what future technology will look like. Two years ago, digital web presses were the ‘buzz,’ and people came to see ‘what-if’ they could do.
Now,
there are installations and you can meet peer printers face to face and talk to them about what they’re doing with the technology, and how they’re applying it. More importantly, how they are evolving into a multimedia manufacturing business. This is one of the primary reasons why all businesses in our industry needs trade shows like GRAPH EXPO, to stay connected dur- ing these times of great change. Show Daily: So, look into your crystal ball for us D.J., what do you see? D.J. Burgess: I see choices with tremendous opportunity! The Printing Industry has led the world in pio- neering, cutting edge technology for people and business to communicate, touch and feel something that inspires progress and change for the better. Going forward, in the short term, I see the Internet playing an ever- expanding role as newer technology, such as social media, fits into the mix of changing communication and con- tent delivery. At GASC and NPES, we’re committed to helping the indus- try see what the future will bring. We’ve established a strategic planning process with the intent to project the printing industry five to seven years out.
And we’re consulting with an outside third party to guide us and help to build that profile.

can tackle these types of jobs more effi- ciently and cost-effectively and, in some cases, also expand their capabilities and keep all components of a campaign under one roof.”
GRAPH EXPO 2010 presents the hot-
test new technologies, whether you work in digital and wide-format imaging, com- mercial, quick and transactional printing, package printing and converting, mailing and fulfillment, in-plant operations, book or newspaper printing. “The show is a great opportunity for attendees to learn about the latest tech- nologies available to help them grow and diversify,” notes Guy Gecht, EFI CEO. “Attendees should focus on the areas of print where the opportunities for profit- able growth are real and significant and the technology that will best enable them to compete in these growth areas of print.” Adds Eric Frank, marketing VP at KBA
North America, “Attendees are given the opportunity to learn about new innovative technologies and talk to face to face with the experts from manufacturers like KBA. Our focus will be introducing solutions that will help printers enter new growth markets with unique applications that yield increased profitability and efficiencies.”
See the innovation Vendors are responding to the sea change within the industry, offering technologies that emphasize automation and efficiency, while meeting today’s marketing require- ments from print buyers.
The industry is in transition, says Peter

Prisco Highlights Latest HP Scitex Wide-Format Inkjet Technologies
T
he PriscoDigital division of Printers’ Service (Prisco), is conducting live demonstra- tions of the recently intro-
duced HP Scitex FB500 and LX600 wide-format inkjet printers at GRAPH EXPO 2010.
According to Steve Zunde, presi- dent of PriscoDigital, “wide-format inkjet technologies enable commer- cial printers to capture new business opportunities from within their exist- ing customer base. Inkjet systems can cost effectively produce diverse applications such as banners, Point- of-Purchase displays or promotional items. We are already helping many customers do just that and more. Since we are the exclusive Elite chan- nel partner of HP Scitex for the large industrial systems within the com- mercial offset segment, we are able to offer our customers the leading edge in wide format technologies”. PriscoDigital (Booth 417) is exhib-
duction and providing new services to meet the changing demands of the marketplace,” he says. “Attendees will walk away from the show having seen the technology that will help them address current business challenges and position their companies for future growth.”
Attendees also have the chance to see automation in action, with many exhibitors partnering to show “lights out” operation. Infrastructure to support end-to-end auto- mation in their companies is the important thing for printers to look at while at the show, notes Gary E. Marron, HIFLEX CEO. “It is crucial that printers adopt the most streamlined systems and capabilities and leverage technology to serve their cus- tomers with differentiation, speed, quality, and accuracy with the lowest administra- tive costs,” he says. Attendees on the show floor can witness
firsthand game-changing technologies. “This year more than ever, attendees will see that change is truly driving our industry, from the way marketers commu- nicate and the impact of packaging to the demand for publishing efficiencies and the evolving role of the print provider,” says Tim Palmer VP, Americas Consumer and Commercial Marketing, Kodak. “That’s why our focus is on showing attendees how technologies and solutions can help achieve the results they need for profitability and growth.” Christopher Morgan, senior VP of HP’s Graphics Solutions Business, agrees. “The printing industry has fundamentally shift- ed—PSPs are finding the new profit center to be in solutions that reduce waste and allow for more targeted and customized communication,” he says.
Bullish about print Kathy McHugh, Presstek CMO and VP,
is bullish on print’s future, but notes it will be used as the initiator in today’s multi- media marketing mix. “We are in a short- run world, so there is a growing need for cost-effective high-quality short-run color printing. These conditions align with the strength of Presstek DI digital offset press- es. I anticipate an increased level of invest- ment in these products by printers who are currently turning away this short-run work, or taking their larger conventional presses off of longer runs.”
Automated postpress operations are also
iting a host of profit-generating solu- tions from HP Scitex. It is debuting the HP Scitex LX600 wide-format inkjet system at GRAPH EXPO, which uti- lizes HP’s unique environmentally- friendly latex ink technology. The LX600 is a 104 in (2.6 m) roll-to-roll inkjet system that permits high-quality printing directly on an extremely wide variety of paper, synthetic and fabric media with multi-roll capability. In addition to accommodating all flex- ible media indoor applications, a wide range of durable outdoor applications
can be produced without the need for solvent inks. Also featured is the HP Scitex FB500, a high-quality versatile 64 in (163 cm) wide six-color UV ink system that can be configured to print on almost any rigid and flexible media. This extremely economical system has a white ink option to allow print providers to take advantage of additional revenue opportunities.
evident on the show floor. “Intelligent post- press automation has now become essen- tial, especially when digital print is added to the mix,” says Mark Hunt, director of mar- keting, Standard Finishing Systems. Show goers should “develop a finishing plan tailored to your production platforms, then work with partners who have applications expertise and who can help you execute over time with the appropriate technology.” GRAPH EXPO 2010 offers attendees an opportunity to witness firsthand emerging and defining technologies that will help determine their business in the years to come.
