Everyday scenes through the operator’s eye

Having experienced success with the ride at Tusenfryd in Norway, Parques Reunidos has added a Giant Discovery (suspended Frisbee) from Zamperla its other park in Scandinavia. The new ride at Bon Bon Land in Denmark swings up to 45-metres high and reaches a top speed of 110km/h.

Benjamin Sweet has been named new general manager of Legoland Discovery Centre Chicago. Relocating from Birmingham, England, Sweet joins LDC after seven years with Alton Towers Resort, another Merlin Entertainments attraction. Open since 2008, the indoor attraction near Chicago includes a Lego “Factory Tour,” Jungle Expedition ride, 4D cinema and two interactive rides, as well as a Lego recreation of the City’s skyline.

Six Flags New England, Agawam, Massachusetts, will add as yet unnamed spinning coaster from Maurer Söhne for the 2011 season. The ride, the park’s 10th coaster, will be located in the DC Super Hero Adventures area. The coaster experience will begin when passengers board the four-seater cars and start a five-storey climb. Once they reach the top of the lift hill riders are sent spinning and twirling through a maze of 17 hairpin turns, winding twists and turns and unexpected dips as they careens along 1,213ft of track.

1) Our carousel is our pride and joy. We lost our 1928 PTC ride in a major fire in 1994. After an extensive search for a suitable replacement, we decided instead to construct one ourselves. This two- year-long project resulted in one of the finest hand carved wooden horse carousels in the world. Note that our family got started in this business by manufacturing carousels in Philadelphia in 1875.

2) Our new attraction for 2010 – A Mega Disk ‘O” from Zamperla called the Revolution 360. It really looks spectacular when it swoops up over the midway and is proving to be very popular.

3) Down next to the 360 is our Whirlwind spinning coaster from Maurer Söhne, one of our four coasters at Seabreeze. I was worried how the two rides would look next to each other and how the colours would match. Turned out great!

4) If I look really closely, beyond those two rides is the vast blue of Lake Ontario, one of the largest fresh water lakes in the world. When it’s white capping I want to drop everything, grab my board and go windsurfing. But in this business, something always needs attention.

5) This is pretty much the view out my office window. A late spring day with the trees leafed out and the flowers just getting started.

Gateway Ticketing has been selected to provide ticketing, revenue management and access control to Susan Mubarak Family Park in Cairo. The company’s software will be integrated with Chinese wing-style turnstiles. Gateway has worked closely in the past with ProFun, which will manage the 69-acre theme park in the Egyptian capital. Named after Egypt’s first lady, Susan Mubarak Family Park is expected to provide a catalyst for development in an area of the city designated as “new Cairo.” The park will comprise gardens, an aviary, ride and shows, as well as a number of dining experiences.

A survey has highlighted concerns about inadequate washing and drying facilities in British public conveniences. The majority of people surveyed by Kimberley Clark Professional fear that poor hand washing and drying facilities in toilets are posing a risk to their health. Nearly a quarter (23%) said facilities were either “never” or “rarely” of a good enough standard. The survey also found that when faced with poor, or no, drying facilities people resort to other methods to dry their hands, including toilet paper, their clothes or letting them dry naturally. A worrying 12% of respondents said that inadequate hand drying facilities would deter them from washing their hands at all.
