ParkWord October 2010
“Ciao” to if you picked up this issue at Euro Attractions Show (EAS) in Rome, and hello to everyone else. It's now almost 10 years since this exhibition began, initially as an expanded version of the parks and attractions show at ATEI in London, in January 2001. After confusion, I believe, with an adult website, “Euroshow” became Euro Amusement Show in 2002, when it was held alongside Interschau in Düsseldorf. A year later the exhibition became a standalone event in Genoa as part of a rolling tour of Europe, meaning Rome will be the second time in Italy. By the time EAS arrived at Disneyland Resort Paris in 2003, organiser EAASI had got into bed with IAAPA, which took over the show in its entirety a few years later, swapping “Amusement” for “Attractions” in recognition of the industry's increasing scope. Objecting to IAAPA's involvement, some of the show's original supporters staged a series of breakaway events in Genoa. Convenient though it was for the Italian manufacturers, it wasn't so handy for some visitors and, without IAAPA's muscle, Technofolies eventually withered away. A partnership with Interschau and rebrand as Amusement Expo Europe did not save the show either. Such is the current strength of EAS, that the DSB (German showmen's union) will not be holding Interschau this year either, although its members will still meet in January. At the time, Park World was a critic of what seemed like an aggressive takeover of EAS by IAAPA. Yet as the show has developed, the association has established a proper European presence, and even most of the original objectors now play an active role in what is recognised as the continent's premier industry get-together. As he prepares for his last few months in office as executive director
of IAAPA Europe, we carry an exclusive interview this month with Andreas Andersen, starting on page 22. European unity is never easy, in any field, but maybe the attractions industry is getting there.
