magine parts start coming down the shakeout line in your casting facility and an inspector deems them defective. A group gathers,


staring at the parts and at each other. In such situations, someone is usually assigned responsibility for trouble- shooting the product defect (by title or otherwise). It would be a rare thing for the group to gather and no one to take responsibility, no one to investi- gate and make subsequent changes, no one to schedule a repair or rerun of the


product. When faced with a problem, someone will step up; it would be a quick road to disaster and financial ruin if the group just stared at each other, shrugged their shoulders and went on with their business. Anyone who has been in this situa-


tion knows that a leader will emerge— willingly or unwillingly—because
