gies back under its wing. To do so, it established Pure Power Technologies, which is based on the company’s engine technology—featured in its MaxxForce engines—that reduces the amount of nitrogen oxides (NOx) emis- sions produced in-cylinder through a method called Advanced EGR (exhaust gas recirculation). Other engine makers’ emissions control methods involve ad- dressing NOx emissions after they have been formed in the engine. Within Pure Power Technologies are individual businesses that produce fuel systems, advanced valves, thermal man- agement devices and complex castings. Pure Power Technologies also recently acquired a stake in an after-treatment company that makes a solid form of ammonia for fuel cells. “We don’t want to be just an as-

sembler,” said Robert Carso, director of marketing and global brand strategy at Navistar. “We want to be a leader, and in order to do that, you have to have core competencies in key technologies. Pure Power Technologies is really focused on that mentality and strategic path.” Both the Indianapolis and Waukesha metalcasting facilities will be part of the Pure Power Technologies business. Pure Power Metalcastings Group-Waukesha will produce the complex castings used in engines featuring EGR technology.
