WORDS AND MUSIC

Words & Music is a new generation of music software which not only allows pupils tomake music but also to write lyrics. It allows the creation of up to three tracks, for example a single treble, alto, bass or percussion track for simple rhymes, chants, raps, and melodies, or two/three‐track compositions for work on harmonies, call and response, rounds, sound effects, layering, etc. Some Words & Music users will enjoy the ‘Paper’ screen, on which coloured strips can be cut, 'glued', stretched, and shrunk to change note length, and moved up/down to change pitch ‐ a unique and powerful way of making music.

As confidence grows they may prefer to edit the notation either here or on the 'Trio' screen. Paper and Trio use identical playback and editing tools, including Insert, Cut, Paste and Copy. The 'Zoom' screen provides an overview of the whole composition/song ‐ it's a great place to discuss musical shapes and repeated patterns. Saves MIDI, MusicXML and WAV files ‐ More than 200 instruments, or optional MIDI ‐ Major, minor, chromatic, Pentatonic and Blues scales, plus 'DIY' for ragas ‐ Traditional notation is always visible (and editable) ‐ Display lyrics and/or note names; use chords or turn them off ‐ Prints near‐professional scores or Paper‐style music sheets Pupils can even record themselves singing along!

NOTATE 2

Notate 2 is amusic composition programintended for children with no particular previous musical knowledge. It provides an intuitive user interface to enable exploration of traditional music notation and the investigation of musical patterns and structures. The Notate 2 environment contains a range of easy‐to‐use features, designed to support musical beginners. It provides a way for all pupils to ‘try out’ musical ideas without having to be able to perform them.

‐ Notate 2 is able to give traditional music notation meaning, as users can drag and drop notes while listening to the pitches and melodic patterns being created. ‐ Pupils have the confidence to experiment and the opportunity to develop their initial ideas using a range of tools, such as move, copy, repeat and undo/redo. Users can explore a different range of timbres than is possible with traditional classroom instruments. ‐ Notation is made easy with a wide range of note lengths & pitches; time & key signatures; and treble, bass & single line percussion clefs.

Pupils can record in real time or step time from an onscreen or external music keyboard.

Notate 2 has a range of features specifically designed to support use on an interactive whiteboard.
