Workplace washrooms

SCA TISSUE EUROPE LOOKS AT FACTORS SUCH AS HYGIENE, CONSUMPTION AND THE NEED TO PROJECT A HIGH IMAGE TO CUSTOMERS ALONG WITH OTHER OFFICE WASHROOM ISSUES.

Washrooms play a surprisingly important part in the office environment.

According to a recent survey more than 65% of people ranked dirty washrooms among their top three pet hates at work.

Nearly half the survey respondents said they would avoid using the workplace washroom at all if it were not sufficiently clean. And 72% felt the cleanliness of the washrooms at work was an important factor in whether or not they enjoyed their jobs.

But offices, besides being a place of work, also act as a showcase for the company itself – one that provides visitors and customers with their first impression of the organisation and its brand values.

So besides the influence they have on employees, office washrooms should also provide a smart and pleasant environment for visitors.

This became clear in our survey, which was carried out for SCA Tissue Europe by United Minds. The study revealed that 65% of people noticed the washroom fixtures when visiting a workplace for the first time – and felt that a company with an attractive washroom was more likely to be successful.

However, while the image projected by the washroom is obviously important, even more important is the role that hygiene plays in the office washroom.

Hygiene is vital in any washroom, but particularly so in the workplace in order to

minimise the spread of infections. Not only does illness at work lead to absenteeism and a consequent loss of productivity, it can also have a detrimental effect on staff morale.

Our survey revealed that more than 70% of people felt the cleanliness of the washrooms at work was an important factor in determining whether or not they enjoyed their jobs.

Washroom systems that minimise cross- contamination can play a major part in reducing the risk of illness. For example, Tork soap dispensers have an optional arm lever to reduce the risk of cross-infection and we also offer foam soap in a smart, upmarket aluminium dispenser that is sensor-operated to avoid any human contact.

Tork hand towel roll dispensers, too, are designed to ensure that the product inside is touched only by the user and there is a sensor- operated version in Tork Aluminium.

The Tork hand towel roll dispenser is ideal for use in larger offices since it is a high-capacity system that reduces the risk of towels running out between maintenance checks, a factor that could compromise hygiene.

Disposable hand towels themselves can also help to reduce the amount of bacteria left on the hands after washing.

A recent study carried out at the University of Westminster and commissioned by the European Tissue Symposium revealed that drying the hands with a paper towel reduced
