Independent Business Awards 2010

tighten their belts they have also responded to the fierce competition with great resourcefulness and imagination. “Many polished further their

considerable sales skills with the help of retra training courses and manufacturers’ training offers. These have not only given independents insights into the latest technology and tools to compete in the aggressive market but also the confidence to stand tall in the face of such competitors as Best Buy. It was good to see that two of the industry’s leading brands have launched selective distribution strategies this spring which aim to reward retailers who add value to their brands and are able to give customers a good shopping experience. And who can do this better than the independent!”

Setting the scene for the evening Nigel

Catlow, GfK business group director, presented an overview of the electrical market’s performance in 2009 and identified the emerging product opportunities in 2010. During the first 22 weeks of 2010, the best growth was recorded in the flat panel television sector (95% increase on 2010, with large panels – above 33in and LED televisions performing particularly well). Set-top

boxes and laptops are growing fast. In domestic appliances, value growth exceeded volume growth; for washing machines it was 7.5% and for freezers - 4.4%. The sales of large capacity washers are booming; for 6-6.7kg capacity washers the growth was 31%, while for 9kg washing machines – 116% (April 2010 compared with April 2009). In the SKA sector, coffee machines are the best sellers. Also 3D TVs recorded a very encouraging performance – almost 4,000 3D panels were sold in May.
