Vitamin D & calcium strengthen bones

It is well established that diets lacking in calcium and vitamin D can contribute to the development of osteo- porosis. Now, a new study has tested whether a 30- month supplement and dietary intervention can help to improve bone density. Sixty-six women (55-65yrs) were randomised to two

groups: 1) Calcium/vitamin D supplements for 12 months followed by fortified foods for 18 months or 2) Control group not receiving any supplements or fortified foods. Arm, spine and total bone mineral density were found to significantly improve in those taking the supplements/forti- fied foods. The authors concluded that intakes of 22.5µg per day vitamin D and 1,200mg per day calcium can go some way to improving the bone density of women that have gone through the menopause. This may help to pro- tect them against bone fractures later in life. For more information see: Moschonis G et al (2010) British Journal of Nutrition 104(1), pg 100-7.

Higher dose plant stanol ester

safe and effective Currently the EU advises that intakes of plant stanol esters (added to certain brands of margarine) should not exceed 2.0-3.0g per day. Now, a new study has shown that higher intakes are better at lower- ing cholesterol and do not seem to affect fat-soluble antioxidants, as previously believed.

Scientists recruited 93 participants

with slightly elevated cholesterol levels. After a three-week run-in period, they ate either control foods, or margarines and soy yoghurts containing 3.0g, 6.0g or 9.0g plant stanols over four-weeks. Results showed that eating up to 9.0g plant stanols each day reduced LDL cholesterol levels by 17 per- cent without affecting plasma fat-soluble antioxidants. Additional research is needed to reconfirm these find- ings but EU guidelines may currently be too low.
