people from every walk of life togeth- er,” Goldstein says. “It has a spiritual side, a business side and a healthy side, and I’ve seen how many young people who used to feel isolated and without direction are now hooping and living life to its fullest.” Highlights of her feel good fi lm in-

clude appearances by Michelle Obama and Shaquille O’Neal, plus intimate portraits of eight hoopers from around the world. “The essence of the fi lm,” says Goldstein, “is about fi nding something you love and taking the risk to give it all you’ve got.”

After discovering hooping, Anah

Reichenbach, aka “Hoopalicious,” a California-based dancer and hooper in the fi lm, started making and selling inno- vative hoops on her own. She now offers a hoop mentor certifi cation program through hooping workshops nationwide. “Beyond being an incredible core workout,” Reichenbach says, “hooping can become an all-body, cardiovascular workout.” Other benefi ts she’s observed fi rst-hand extend to increased calm and peacefulness, happiness and even more personal compassion.

As a movement, the hoop has be-

come a widespread symbol for individu- als’ willingness to be free and playful as adults as well as show that they care about community; people unite around the rhythm and creativity. “You really can transcend yourself if you let yourself go with the hoop,” remarks Goldstein. “Even if you have no rhythm, you get it with a hoop.”

I’ve been thinking about this conversation I had with my friend Gwen. We were both talking about the perfect way the Universe is balanced. The happy and not so happy things happening, not randomly, but in a beautiful symphony of events. Sometimes this balance is seen only from a distance, after time has passed. I know you know what I mean. She told me she was no longer satis- fied with always praying for all the good things to happen. Wow. It’s true, isn’t it? Can’t remember a single time when I thought…Oh please let the next to the best thing happen, or even some not so good thing, thanks…Crazy, right? Her new tactic is so simple that I have adopted it as my own. I have faith that whatever comes, I have been given all I need to handle it. I have all the strength, all the creativeness, all the genius, in any given situation, to see it through with integrity, intelligence, and grace. I believe this is true for everyone. And what a difference it makes! I am no longer blindsided by unhappy events. They just are. It doesn’t make the sting any less great, but I do receive it from a different perspective, and therefore, with a different attitude. It is very liberating. Very stabilizing. And very life affirming.
