experts Sara Phelan of Pure and Simple Baby and Marissa Evans of Growing Green Bums for advice, and they each quickly produced the same answer, “Keep it simple.” “Parents need to learn to edit,” says Marissa. “Mainstream tells us we need all of these products to have a happy, healthy baby, when so many baby products simply aren’t necessary. Stop and ask yourself if you really need something before you buy it. Often the answer is no. Go with your instincts, and you’ll know what to do.” Sara agrees. “Even with ‘green’ product choices, keep it simple. Don’t allow yourself to become overwhelmed by choices and guilt. Educate yourself, and then do one or two things that feel right for you and your family. Over time, you will notice yourself making more and more green choices without realizing it. Make it fun and forget the stress.” Taking care of the basics for baby can also lead to a healthier lifestyle for the family. Both Marissa and Sara recommend that beyond cloth diapers, parents take a close look at items baby will come into close contact with. This includes cleaning products, bedding, clothing, and food. Avoid chemicals where you can, looking for truly natural or organic products, and remember that if you eat organic, yourself, making safe food for baby is relatively simple.
