On the Set


What is the strangest or most unique set you have designed for


Weeds in its first five seasons? Well, I’d say a pot club built inside an old dry cleaner or a drug


tunnel that runs from the backroom of a maternity store, under the Mexican border and comes up in the bathroom of a grungy brake light shop. It’s very glamorous work! Another unique set is “Bubbie’s house” or what we are now calling


the beach house. Finding all the collectibles in that house was like a giant treasure hunt. My crew and I spent every Sunday scouring flea markets for old salt and pepper shakers, ceramic owls and glass grapes. We had more than 1,000 snow globes in one room alone.


How do you go about sourcing product for the more unconven- tional sets, such as the Mexican rebel camp? Fortunately, we have prop houses here in L.A. where we can rent


some of the specialty items, for example, the giant camouflage nets, the old military tents and the dummy rifle racks. The prop houses are an invaluable resource. They have done the collecting for us. For sets that are more permanent, we have to purchase everything.


That is where the resourcing gets more challenging. Everyone in my department logs many computer hours every day trying to find the more unusual products. We search stores all over the country, Craig- slist and any place we can think of. Occasionally, we just cannot find what we are looking for and we’ll have it manufactured. But that’s more fun anyway!


In addition to season six of “Weeds,” do you have any new proj- ects on the horizon? I’m fortunate to be really busy. I just finished set decorating NBC’s


“Parks and Recreation,” and in March I returned to “Weeds” for sea- son six. I also design private homes. At the moment I have two very special projects: a beautiful Hollywood Hills Estate for one of my producers and a home in Woodland Hills with a gorgeous view for a director who also happens to be my closest friend.
