Hillhead hits the heights

With a record 455 exhibitors and hot, sunny weather, the Hillhead event had many new products on show for the quarrying, construction and hire industries.

Volvo minis take the stage

Volvo Construction Equipment’s comprehensive Hillhead line-up included the EC18C mini excavator from a range of new, improved and expanded models in the 1.5-2 tonne class. Pictured at the controls of the machine is Volvo’s David Munns, Director, Roads & Utility Equipment. The four new machines, namely the EC15C, EC17C, EC18C and EC20C replace the existing EC15B in XR, XT and XTV variants and the EC20B in XT and XTV versions. All are powered by a 16.8hp diesel engine and incorporate what the manufacturer describes as a hydraulic translation

function, giving the operator the choice of using either hand levers or foot pedals. Simultaneous control of slew and offset movements

is also provided via an electro-proportional roller. Volvo also gave details of its Eco Operator training

programme to raise awareness of environmental issues. The manufacturer’s training staff visit customers’ at their premises to advise users on good working practices to minimise fuel consumption. This, in turn, lowers costs, improves operator efficiency without compromising productivity, and extends machine life while reducing emissions.

New Ammann paver on show

New from Ammann Equipment was the APW 150 G compact wheeled paver, designed for work in confined areas, such as small-

scale road repairs or the installation of cables along pathways. The 790kg machine has two rear wheels for traction and one at the front for steering. The integral hopper can be loaded from the side and the operator can stand on a platform at the rear. A Hatz 1B40 engine is incorporated and the machine can spread material in widths ranging from 800-1300mm, to a thickness of 5-100mm.

Western’s new Masters

Western Environmental’s new Diesel Master heavy-duty, single-skin plastic tanks are

intended to remain on a service vehicle. Available in 100, 200 and 400 litre capacities, a 12V electric pump, 4m delivery hose and auto-nozzle are included as standard. The company sees the product as a more efficient means of re-fuelling small equipment such as generators, mowers and compactors, where jerrycans are of limited capacity, tend to be messy and are heavy to handle.
