CHANGE BRINGS FAMILIARITY

With themen’s basketball programat the pinnacle of its 70-year existence, the College didn’t look far to find FranMcCaffery’s replacement.

Calling it his “dreamjob,”Mitch Buonaguro was introduced as the program’s 15th head coach on April 8. Before looking forward, he took amoment to reflect on his time as an assistant at Siena.

“We established an excellent program,” Buonaguro said. “One thing I always admired about Fran is he reached for the stars. He never settled formediocrity. I think I learned that fromhim. When you chase perfection, and I really believe this, when you reach for the stars, excellence comes with that. It takes a lot of work. And that’s how I’mgoing to coach.”

The Siena community was overwhelming in its support of the hiring.

“Mitch is a well-rounded basketball coach who knows the game, who can teach the game, who can recruit for the game and who canmake decisions in the game that will enable his teamto succeed,” Siena College President Father KevinMullen O.F.M. said.

Buonaguromade quite an impression in his five years as an assistant, immers- ing himself in the Siena community and personifying theCollege’smission.

Endowments are another way in which people actively supported Siena athletics this past year. An endowment is an interest-bearing account that assists the College in enhancing programs and pro- viding a better experience for students. The College spends interest income generated by the account. Along with a general endowment, two special endowment funds have been established in the last few years – theHoward T. Tucker ’41 Endowment Fund and theMen’s Lacrosse Alumni Fund.

TheHoward T. Tucker ’41 Endowment Fund was created by a group of formermen’s basketball players to honor the legacy of one of Siena athletics’ true pioneers and the first person inducted into the school’s SportsHall of Fame. The funds generated from the Tucker endowment go toward the department’s general operating budget to benefit all sports at Siena.

TheMen’s Lacrosse Alumni Fund was designed to help themen’s lacrosse programcontinue its ascent by generating additional funding that will go toward operating costs.
